How to Become Successful Writer

Becoming a writer is one of the most wanted job in America. I think its clearly understandable. What most of us understand about the successful writer that they are rich and famous but they doesn't have to work hard. They can work in flexible time, only working as long as they want to. Just like Carrie Bradshaw in Sex in the City. What she do just have fun all night, sleeping or shopping all day with only spend little time to write something in the afternoon. And fortunately she still has a life that could afford her to buy expensive Manolo Blatnik shoes anytime she want. But is it true that writers life are so easy ?

Not since I read On Writing by Stephen King. We all know him as a very productive writer, he able to write more than 3 story per-year. All of his story always interesting and go far beyond our imagination. After has long career, his story becoming better and better. I still wondering why he still able to write a very good story such as Green Miles after write so many books. And his recently creation such as "1408" , two thumbs up for him ! How could his creativity never dry off ? And think about all his book in the last thirty years, all of them become best seller and some of them has additional royalty when producers make movie based on those story. Can you imagine how rich he is ? He is very successful, very famous and very rich. But how does he give advice for us to become successful writer ? He said there is no easy way. Its need a work hard and a hard heart.

Let me conclude what he suggest in ‘On Writing' book to become long lasting successful writer :

1. If you want to write something, ignore grammar , ignore your worrying about how story will be ended, ignore that you write a bad story. Just sit down and write it. Let your imagination come freely. You can go back again to fix the grammar. The ending part of the story will be showed up suddenly. And if you don't like the plot you still be able to go back and make the better one.
2. Read many books. He usually read 70 until 80 fiction books per-year. Its help you to develop your own story and give you pattern of thinking. He even said reading is the center of life of a writer. If you don't have time to read, you don't have ‘resources' to write.
3. Write everyday. He give Anthony Trollope as a model who write 2 hours every morning before go to work. If you are not consistent, you will lost the plot, the narration, the character, the inspiration. And finally, you lost interest to write. Don't wait until Goddess of inspiration to come. If you have persistency to write, she will know how to approach you.
4. Have private place for you to write. It doesn't have to be a fancy place. It can be just a simple place, as long as it has partition or a door to say to all people that you don't wont to be bothered. Find the way to make you concentrate. Some of the people needs hard music to stay away from the world so they can write. Others just need closed windows and really quite place.
5. Don't stuck to the plot you made at the first time. It can make you too rigid and lost spontaneity to develop interesting story. Some idea will come up, when you start to develop your story. King even confess he never made a plot before. All his story come up when he is continuing to write.
6. Don't show your writing before its finished. And remember, you can't make everybody satisfied. And you can't make some of them who like your story keep satisfied. But you still need a reader who feel satisfied with your writing, even for a moment. So do not ever give up to go back and fix your story. Sometime some brilliant idea show up after you finished your writing. King suggested to wait until 6 weeks and you have started another new project, before you fix your story. Its like waiting yeast done with its fermentation before you bake your bread. You will find plot inconsistency, wrong grammar or any other mistake easily.
7. Have a healthy life, physically and spiritually. You can't be productive if you sick. King said, his happy married life gives much contribution to his successfulness.
